MAREL
Marine Eutrophication Lab

An International Research Laboratory (CNRS · UERJ · UFF) dedicated to understanding eutrophication processes in tropical coastal zones.

About the laboratory

Created in January 2026 by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), the IRL MAREL aims to improve knowledge on all aspects of eutrophication processes in tropical coastal zones.

Biogeochemical cycles

Study of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, and the propagation of eutrophication at the continent-ocean interface.

Mangrove vulnerability

Assessing how mangrove ecosystems respond to eutrophication, including carbon storage and microbial processes in urban and preserved mangroves.

Biological communities

Investigating phytoplankton dynamics, harmful algal blooms and the use of bio-indicator organisms to monitor eutrophication.
